The Space Between

We are so focused on what feeds our senses, on content, on things. But what if instead, we pondered the space in between?

If it weren’t for the space, could it be so Grand? Could we call it a mountain, a valley or Canyon?

If it weren’t for the space would we hear our own call? Echoing in the distance, bouncing of the walls?

And when the tree fell, it would have no space to fall. And then for sure, we would hear nothing at all!

If it weren’t for the space, where would the river go? Would there even be an ocean? What about rain or snow?

How could the birds fly or the clouds drift and float? I probably would have no use for my boat!

And what about the stars, how is it that they can be? It must have something to do with the space in between.

To bring balance into our lives, it is helpful to remember, that it is the space between that binds us together.

So next time you contemplate a rock or a flower, instead see the space and that is true power.

This is the view looking from the top of the Tabernacle, towards the Unkar Delta. In this painting, are also Comanche Point, the Lava Chuar drainage and the Butte Fault.  I’ve always loved this (early Spring/late Fall) hike to the Tabernacle which is accessible from Rattlesnake Camp. The Spring time can be amazing on this slope with rare and unique varieties of desert shrubs, flowers and cacti in bloom.  Pretty much right from camp, it’s a steep scramble to a razor sharp ridge which you cautiously follow for a half a mile or so. It’s a straight drop off on both sides!  It reminds me of the back of some giant prehistoric creature! About 3 miles later and 2500ft higher, you wind around the back side and pop out on the top of the Tabernacle. Then from there, its just a “short” jaunt over to Solomon’s Temple. It was the razor back ridge coupled with a breath taking view that inspired this painting.
