Solitude

This is one of my favorite paintings and some days I miss having it in my midst. I am grateful that a long time, Flagstaff/river family friend has adopted it!

Here, I am trying to convey a feeling, an essence, more than any place in particular. It is a feeling I have become familiar with in Grand Canyon, in the role of a caring guide. There are some places in the Upper Granite Gorge that demand a pause, a silent reverence, a humble recognition and a certain feeling and awareness comes over you. Maybe Horn Creek Rapid or Crystal is just around the corner or you’re in the swift narrow water below Waltenberg, these walls, this place, this deep space demands our attention. Despite the roar of the river and the shallow chatter of your passengers, this attention can draw you in and in it, there is stillness, there is silence, focus, timelessness, and somehow ease as you surrender one moment to the next. It feels solitary yet connected. It is just you and the river, you and the place, and then the “you” dissolves into the experience. Where there is truth, there is Paradox. In the Solitude we find the entirety.
