In the Spring of 2006, my step-sister, Soleil was killed in a car accident on I17 after falling asleep at the wheel. She had just finished a 12 hour nursing shift at Flagstaff Medical Center and was heading home to her 1 year old daughter in Prescott Valley. Tragic. Devastating. Heartbreaking. It’s the phone call you never want to get. My parents have never been the same. They do find joy in everyday life, but I know it is hard some days. Ironically, my sister changed her name to Soleil. I say ironically because she herself was a sort of troubled, tormented soul. She struggled in this life to be happy and content but, she worked hard and was a good person. Sunflowers were her favorite. I painted this in honor of her and in hopes that this image could spread joy and happiness to those in need of a little extra boost. That is all of us.
I’d like to believe that when she passed, she was at peace. Maybe she hit some sort of “astral do-over” button. Maybe her spirit has been given another chance to live free and happy. Maybe now she lives on in every beautiful flower. Where ever you are, dear sister, we miss you and think of you everyday!
